Conclusion:
This encouragement to true love reminded them again of God’s gracious provision for salvation in time and eternity. Love for God is not wrought by legalistically observing commands, but by responding to one’s knowledge and appreciation of God’s love.
Notes:
If you love the Lord you will love the things that he love! Better yet how can you love God and you refuse to love your brother and sister in the faith, and how you not have a burning desire to snatch a lost soul from the punishment and eternal separation from the presence of God!
Why did God hate the Nicolaitans?
Lamp stands =light, God is all knowing (Omniscience)
God keeps a record on what we do. Describes their identification as followers of Jesus vs. 3.
Christ's commendation now turns to condemnation...why?
The church was initially zealous and motivated by love, but that love diminished as time passed.
This love could be directed at God or brothers and sisters in the Lord.
Their love for unbelievers in the city may have also wand under the heavy hand of persecution.
Condemnation and next a call to repentance.
God exhorted the church of Ephesus to turn back to him. Perhaps, you lost your fire/zeal for God =, his people, or the desire to evangelize the people in the Date street community because they seemed to be harden people, like gang banger, druggies, hookers, and crooks.
I will remove: Failure to repent leads to judgment.
If a church fails to fulfill its function it will not continue to exist! God want us to oppose unjust behavior and favor righteousness.
Figure of Speech Description: Incongruity, Name: Catachresis
